With the Red Sox schedule now set in stone, I thought it would worthwhile to do a month-by-month breakdown of what lies ahead. The MLB and MLBPA hastily and shockingly agreed to a new CBA, and the entire 162-game slate was preserved. Fans in Beantown will be able to catch most Red Sox games on the New England Sports Network (NESN), with a few games nationally televised on Fox and ESPN. Yet something unexpected happened the very next day. Interleague games in 2022 will pit the American League East against some National League Central rivals. The Yankees home opener on April 7 will be against the Red Sox. For Tampa Bay, it will be their first Opening Day at Boston since 2009. Forget 162 games: It seemed likely that the entire month of April would be wiped out. The Red Sox will open at home against the Rays on March 31 and finish on the road in Toronto on October 2. That scene repeated itself the next week when an agreement was failed to be reached by MLB’s arbitrary deadline and Manfred canceled another week. On March 1, after a week of negotiations in Florida, commissioner Rob Manfred announced that the MLBPA had rejected the owner’s offer and that he was canceling the first week of the season.
